Max Payne does spectacle right, and the pairing of its realistic feel and over-the-top setting works beautifully. Many levels feel as if they were plucked from the climax of a John Woo classic, with all the slow-motion and dodging sideways through the air that his iconic movies are known for. Max Payne 3 succeeds in making players feel like each level is part of a cinematic action-movie-style gunfight that is all interactive. Levels in Max Payne 3 include a massive shootout at an abandoned soccer stadium, a showdown with the mafia in a New Jersey graveyard, and a nail-biting all-out gun battle in an airport, set to a heart-pumping soundtrack. Max Payne 3 is filled to the brim with thrilling setpiece after setpiece, delivering great shootout action between Max and a bevy of varying enemy factions. This focus on realism makes each gunfight feel tense and strategic while simultaneously thrilling as bullets cut streams through the air in slow-motion, narrowly missing Max as he dives for cover and blasts away.

The character even shifts the long-gun to his off-hand to pull out a pistol and discards the rifle or shotgun if the player draws two pistols at once. Max bumps into objects and reacts, realistically draws and fires weapons, and can only hold one rifle and two pistols at any time. By combining the series' signature bullet-time slow-motion mechanics with the RAGE engine's focus on realistic movement, Rockstar created a shooter that feels more weighty and realistic than so many others. Max Payne 3 uses the Rockstar Advanced Game Engine (RAGE engine) to incredible success, delivering some of the best third-person shooting action in the last decade. The gameplay, however, is where Max Payne 3 really shines. Max Payne 3 is still a neo-noir game, but not nearly as much as the first two moody Remedy entries in the series. Clearly drawing heavy inspiration from Scott's 2004 film Man on Fire, Max Payne 3 leans into its crime film angle both story-wise and in its aesthetic.

Max Payne 3 tells its story through a heavily stylized series of cutscenes that perforate the action with a shaky-cam style reminiscent of iconic film director Tony Scott. Fleeing New York City after a bar shootout with the mafia, Max spends his days in the Brazilian sunshine in a drug and drink-addled stupor, full of self-loathing and regret. No longer a law enforcement agent, the protagonist of Max Payne 3 is now an even more troubled man, working by day as a bodyguard to Brazil's elite Branco family and drinking away his demons at night. Max Payne 3 takes the former DEA agent and reimagines the character, literally removing him entirely from his New York home and into the high-flying world of Brazil's elite bourgeois and its dark criminal underbelly. After publishing the iconic Remedy-developed Max Payne and Max Payne 2: The Fall of Max Payne games, Rockstar bought the Max Payne franchise and delivered Max Payne 3 in 2012.
